County DFL to hold annual picnic
The Otter Tail County Democratic Farmer Labor Party will hold its annual picnic next Tuesday, July 16, at Pebble Lake Picnic Shelter on Pebble Lake Road in Fergus Falls from 5-9 p.m.
Ken Martin, state chair for the Minnesota DFL, will be the special guest.
Martin holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science and history from the University of Kansas. He has a long history of involvement in campaigns in Minnesota and around the country.
It was during his senior year at Eden Prairie High School that Martin started his political activism, having been inspired by a Carleton College professor’s campaign for the U.S. Senate. Like many people, Senator Paul Wellstone inspired Martin to a life of organizing for social justice, electing progressives, and building electoral power.
To this day, Martin believes strongly that people can change the world through electoral politics. He has spent the past two decades working for several elected officials and managing a variety of issue and election campaigns.
In 2010, Martin worked to elect a DFL governor as the executive director of WIN Minnesota and then as the director for Governor Mark Dayton’s recount efforts. In 2008, he ran the “Vote Yes” campaign to pass the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, a ballot initiative to dedicate funding to Minnesota’s arts, environmental and historical treasures. It is the largest conservation finance measure in the nation to ever become law.
Visitors to the annual picnic will have the opportunity to meet and talk with Martin as well as other area DFL leaders.
Sloppy joes, chips, beans, soda and birthday cake (to celebrate Martin’s birthday) will be provided.
Suggested donation is $6 per person or $15 per family. A silent auction and bake sale will be included in the festivities. There will be a float and balloons near the park entrance.
