Otter Tail County has announced its partnership with Emergency Communications Network to provide the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to all residents and property owners in the county.

CodeRED is a high-speed mass notification system designed to enable recipients to receive emergency notification messages that are specific to their community, such as power outages, evacuations, chemical spills and train derailments.

“CodeRED allows us to take the notification system countywide. And because it is locally managed, it puts county and municipal officials in the unique position to send community-specific emergency information that residents need to know,” said Patrick Waletzko, Otter Tail County’s emergency manager.

Anyone who registers with the system is automatically enrolled in community emergency notifications. They can also select whether they want to be alerted for general notifications and can choose to sign up for storm-based automatic weather warnings directly from the National Weather Service. For all notifications, residents choose how they want to be alerted – by telephone, text message, email or mobile app.

Everyone is encouraged to register with the system. Self-registration is available by going to the county’s website  at www.co.ottertail.mn.us/ and clicking on the CodeRED logo; assistance is also available from Otter Tail County Emergency Management or local city offices.

Otter Tail County reminds CodeRED registrants:

-If you are already a part of your city’s roster to be notified for community emergencies, you must also enroll in order to receive the CodeRED Weather Warnings.

-Enter a physical address to ensure you are included in all map-based weather and community notifications. During the registration process, you will have the option to pinpoint your exact location.

-Make your notification selections carefully; weather warnings may be issued at any time of day or night.

-If you have signed up to receive weather alerts from other sources (media, smartphone app, etc.), you may receive multiple notifications for the same storm, one from CodeRED and others from the other sources. CodeRED weather alerts are storm-based (not county-based) and come directly from the National Weather Service.
