Create a scarecrow
Here's your chance to use your brain, and your creativity, to build the perfect corn patch guardian.
A "scarecrow contest" is a new feature for the 2008 East Otter Tail County Fair.
It is one of several new additions to the fair lineup, including a tug-of-war contest hosted by the Perham Area Jaycees. The 2008 fair, at the Perham fairgrounds, will be July 17-20.
"You can use any materials you want," said Rick Breitenfeldt, vice president of the fair board.
After all, the Wizard of Oz managed to find a brain for "Scarecrow."
Basically, the only rules are that it must be free standing, and can be no more than eight feet tall. The scarecrow entries will be displayed in the exhibit building, which has a ceiling clearance of little more than eight feet.
Breitenfeldt wanted to get the word out early, so contestants can start planning their creation.
"This isn't something you can throw together at the last minute," said Breitenfeldt.
For more information on the contest, call Breitenfeldt at 346-5519; or Allison Keil, 346-7325.
The Jaycees tug-of-war contest will award prizes to the top three teams. There is a 1,000 pound weight limit for each team.
For information on the tug contest, call Jaycee Vance Bachmann at 346-4448.
The fair board's "bar stool races" will be featured again, noted Breitenfeldt. This year, a new "open class" has been created--in which entrants "build their own" bar stool.
