Dale J. Sumers, 76, of Park Rapids, formerly of West Fargo, N.D., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at MeritCare - Palliative Unit, Fargo, N.D.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1932 in Los Angeles, Calif. He grew up in southern California with his parents, Joseph and Marguerite (Altmeyer) Sumers. He attended school in southern California and graduated from San Jose University in 1956.
He married Nancy Taylor on Aug. 6, 1955 in Woodland Hills, Calif. He taught and coached in northern California for 11 years, eventually moving to Roswell, N.M. to work as athletic director for the Roswell Independent School District. He and his family moved to West Fargo in 1975, where he worked for 12 years as the athletic director for the West Fargo School District. He retired from education in 1987. He later worked for New York Life Insurance Company for 10 years before retiring in 1996.
He was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Park Rapids, where he served as a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He spent years working with "Meals on Wheels" and served as the treasurer of the Township Board.
In 1987 he was named North Dakota "Athletic Director of the Year" and in 2001 was inducted into the North Dakota State Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife; seven children: Matthew (Becky), of Champlin; Leslie (Tom) Carriveau, of West Fargo, N.D.; Joseph (Cindy), of West Fargo, N.D.; Catherine (Tim) Lunde, of Fargo, N.D.; Susan Ridgeway, of West Fargo, N.D.; Julie (Ben) McKee, of Richardton, Texas; Thomas (Stephanie), of West Fargo, N.D.; 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter: Kathleen; and a sister, Anne Johnson.
Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Park Rapids.
