Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son



Funeral Mass was held for Darlene Steinbach, 70, of New York Mills, on Sept. 16 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Butler with Fr. Matthew Kuhn officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation and accompanied by Pam Nelson. Special music was provided by Dan Schik. Pallbearers were Christopher Coryell, Cale Coryell, Bryan Bauck, Erik Thompson, Josh Thompson, Tavis Wallgren and A.J. Hensel. Darlene was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, New York Mills.

Darlene Laverne Steinbach was born on March 16, 1943 in Perham to the late Vernon and Laurine (Haavig) Bauck. Darlene attended Homestead Township Country School until transferring to New York Mills High School where she graduated with the Class of 1961. On Sept. 12, 1961, she was united in marriage to James R. Steinbach at Holy Cross Church in Butler. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Jim and Darlene chose to create a life for their family on the family dairy farm in Homestead Township.

Darlene could most often be found on her lawnmower, in one of her many beautiful flower gardens, cooking, or entertaining her host of friends and family. In her few quiet moments, she enjoyed drinking a cup of coffee while quilting and embroidering.

A special place was held in her heart for each one of her grandchildren and her great-grandchild. She spent many happy hours teaching them and passing on to them her love of cooking, gardening and sewing.

On Sept. 12, 2013, Darlene passed away at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Preceeding Darlene in death are her parents, Vernon and Laurine; father- and mother-in-law, Walter and Margaret Steinbach; sister-in-law, Jeanne Steinbach; brother-in-law, Robert R. Thompson; and niece, Wanda Bauck.

Darlene is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Steinbach; four daughters, Patricia (Tony) Hensel, Tamara (Charles) Coryell, Sherri (Tim) Wallgren and Jessica (Jon) Pauna; son, Steven (Kerrie) Steinbach; 16 grandchildren, Rachel (Nick) Gunderson, Katie and A.J. Hensel, Tyler, Kassidy, Kalli, Kami and Kacie Steinbach, Christopher and Cale Coryell, Tavis and Leah Wallgren, and Peyton, Macie, Tate and Stella Pauna; great-grandchild, Aiden James Gunderson; brother, Donnie (Sharon) Bauck; sister, Karen Thompson; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Robert (MaryAnn) Steinbach, Joyce (Tom) Andrews, William Steinbach, Judy (Brian) Olson and Mary (Steve Bohne) Matti; two uncles, Rowland and Marvin Bauck; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Arrangements were with the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills.
