Detroit Lakes native David V. Schafbuch, 59, of St. Cloud, Minn., died Saturday October 4, 2008 at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center.
David Schafbuch was born to Vernon and Mary (Schoelkoph) Schafbuch on Sept. 26, 1949 in Detroit Lakes. He graduated from Foley High School. He also completed a two-year course in electronics at the St. Cloud Vocational-Technical School. He was a U.S, Navy veteran, serving for six years. He was stationed in the Great Lakes, Long Beach, Calif., and the guided missile base in Dam Neck, Va.
After overseas duties including the countries of Australia, New Zealand and the islands of the Philipines, the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Vietnam and the Hawaiin Islands, David returned to the home base at San Diago, Calif. He graduated with distinction. He also served as an instructor on occasion. He was in charge of radar aboard the Decater and received a certificate of appreciation from President Richard Nixon. After military duty, he was employed in Bloomington at Northern Telecommunications computer factory.
Surviving David are his mother, Mary Schafbuch of Foley; and a cousin. Preceding him in death were his father, Vernon, and brother, Mark.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008 at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, Foley, with the Rev. Tim Wittwer officiating. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church in Foley. Burial will be in the Riverside Lutheran Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Foley American Legion Post 298.
