Dennis W. Johnson, 77, of Mora, died on Sunday, December 30, 2007 at his home.
Dennis Walter Johnson was born to John Walter and Pearl (Seline) Johnson on June 28, 1930 in Mora, Minn. He grew up on the family dairy farm north of Mora, and graduated from Mora High School in 1947. Dennis was a member of the school football and basketball teams. From 1951-53 he served in the United States Army. After returning to civilian life, he attended Gustavus Adolphus College, where he met Carol Johnson of Callaway. They were married in 1957.
During the late 1950s, Dennis worked for A.C. Nielsen Market Research, which took him and Carol to Walnut Creek, Calif. In the early 1960s they returned to Callaway, where Dennis became involved in his father-in-law's business, Johnson Bee Farms. This was one of the larger commercial bee operations in the state of Minnesota. He eventually owned and operated the business, and continued to do so until his retirement in 1988.
Dennis loved the outdoors, deer hunting and fishing. He regularly took his family on numerous canoe trips to northern Minnesota and Canada. He was also an avid bowler. He was a member of the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Detroit Lakes School Board and was a member of the Callaway City Council for many years.
Dennis is survived by his children, Eric (Clare) Johnson of Detroit Lakes, Kurt (Rhonda) Johnson of Duluth, Greg (Daniela) Johnson of Callaway, Erin (Dave) Norris of Inver Grove Heights and their mother, Carol Johnson of Idaho; nine grandchildren; brother Donald Johnson of Roseville; sisters Vonnie Olson of Mora and Joan Sorenson of Faribault; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Dresser-Methven Funeral Home in Mora, with the Rev. Douglas Larson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora. Memorials are preferred sent to the Mora Food Shelf. Arrangements were entrusted to Dresser-Methven Funeral Home.
