Dousing a practice house fire

Chris Happel for the Focus The plume of smoke many Perham residents saw on the evening of April 20 was a practice house fire lit and then put out by the Perham Fire Department. The house was included in property purchased by Tuffy's as part of the company's expansion project. The fire department recently purchased a new fire truck, which is scheduled to arrive in town in several weeks.

The plume of smoke many Perham residents saw on the evening of April 20 was a practice house fire lit and then put out by the Perham Fire Department. The house was included in property purchased by Tuffy's as part of the company's expansion project. The fire department recently purchased a new fire truck, which is scheduled to arrive in town in several weeks.

"We're thankful to Tuffy's for donating the house," Fire Chief Mark Schmidt said. "It allowed us to do some valuable training and enhance our firefighters' skills."

Schmidt said that the fire department brought in instructors from the Wilmar, Minn. and the Twin Cities metro area to assist with training. Overall, Schmidt said that the Perham Fire Department dealt with 37 structure fires last year.
