Eagle wrestlers Class A Academic State Champs

The New York Mills Eagles wrestling team was named the Minnesota Class A State Academic Champions.

The New York Mills wrestling team handed out season ending awards, including the announcement the team was named the Minnesota Class A Academic State Champions.

As a whole, the team earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.72.

"This award is a deserving compliment to a hard working group of athletes who had a very strong season," Head Coach Eric Niemi said. "A 3.72 team GPA really reflects what a great place the wrestling room is and the dedication of the New York Mills school system to its students."

Other awards given out were:

Outstanding wrestler: Shane Novak. Novak finished runner-up at 112 pounds at the Class A state individual wrestling tournament in St. Paul. Novak was also named to the All-State team.

Most Improved: Tyler Patron.

Eagle Award: Shane Novak and Peter Stark.

Rookie of the year: Tyler Ehnert.

The team finished the season with an overall record of 14-6 and had three Park Region Conference Champions: Tommy Selander 103 pounds, Novak, 112 and Patron at 189 pounds.

Accompanying Novak on a trip to the state tournament were Seth Hofland, 152 pounds and Noah Pesola, 171 pounds.

Robert Williams

Robert is a Minnesota Newspaper Association award-winning Sports Editor at the Detroit Lakes Tribune. Williams worked prior as the Sports Editor in Perham for the Focus, a Forum Communications newspaper, from 2010-14.
