Despite giving up 12 points forfeiting matches at 160 pounds and heavyweight, the remainder of the New York Mills wrestling squad scored enough to squeak out a one-point victory over Perham, 34-33.
"We really felt that we gave up some bonus points that we didn't have to," Perham Head Coach Robb Moser said. "Give Mills credit, they got the wins that they needed to get (with bonus points) and did not give up as many bonus points as they could have."
Tommy Selander and Shane Novak, did what they typically do, put up 12 quick points with wins by fall over Sam Pirrotta and James Harlow, respectively. The duo did it in nearly the same time. Selander pinned Pirrotta at 3:14. Novak took out Harlow at 3:17.
Novak and Harlow battled each other last weekend at the Perham Barrel O' Fun Monsters of the Mat tournament. Novak prevailed in that match, as well.
With the forfeits covered, it was a head-to-head battle between the 10 remaining matches.
Brandon Lueders got Perham on the board with a 7-1 decision over Tyler Ehnert.
Josh Werner, at 125 pounds, pinned Taylor Ericksrud at 1:53, while Luke Sailer gave Perham the lead, 14-12, after winning by technical fall, 16-0, over Kyle Vorderbruggen.
At 135 pounds, Brady Sazama extended the Yellowjacket lead to 17-12 defeating Andrew Mindermann, 11-4.
Michael Meyer was the first of three consecutive Eagle victories, pulling out a 7-3 decision over Ty Haverland.
Peter Stark got the lead back for NY Mills, 20-17, after a 15-0 technical fall over Jacob Monson at 145 pounds.
Seth Hofland made it 26-17 Eagles pinning Andrew Moberg at 3:05.
William Parks got six free points for Perham by forfeit at 160 pounds.
Points were at a premium. The score was 26-23 Eagles, with six free points coming to Perham at heavyweight, as state #2 wrestler Jesse Hein was uncontested.
Noah Pesola and Tyler Patron defeated Payton Jordahl and David Langlie by a combined score of 21-2, 9-1 in favor of Pesola and 12-1 for Patron to send the match to the final two bouts at 34-23 NY Mills.
With six points coming to Hein, Cody Nylander needed a technical fall or better to give Perham the victory.
Nylander defeated Max Carlson 14-3 for the major decision and four points but left the Yellowjackets one point short.
"Even with our guys at the right weight class, those open weights make team wrestling a must," NY Mills Head Coach Eric Niemi said. "We had a dual where everyone contributed with wins and losses. It was smart wrestling."
