Eagles drop tough opener to Wolverines
The New York Mills Eagles (0-1) girls basketball team had a rough opener against Wadena-Deer Creek, as the Wolverines improved to 3-0 with a 79-9 victory Friday, Dec. 2.
The Wolverines upset #3 ranked (1A) Sebeka 62-49 in Sebeka the prior evening.
"Tonight's game was a learning experience for our girls.," Head Coach JJ Weller said. "It was a chance to play against a very good, balanced team with a lot of speed, height, and shooting. All those factors became too much for us and we were overwhelmed early."
The Eagles struggled hitting shots from the floor and from the line. NY Mills shot only 16 percent from the free throw line going 3-19. The Wolverines sank half of their attempts 11-22.
"When we were able to get some shot looks we struggled shooting. The ball wouldn't go in from the outside and we had trouble getting shots off against Wadena's two tall post players."
Caitlin Volkmann and Emily Miron had 20 and 21 points respectively for the Wolverines.
Ellie Rutten had four to lead the Eagles.
The Wolverines played aggressive defensely causing turnovers and off-balanced shots, which were not falling for the Eagles.
"We need to take what we can from this game, get it out of our minds, and then work on our weaknesses to be prepared for next week's two games."
