The New York Mills Eagles used big sticks to clear the bases, scoring double-digits in both games, in a sweep of conference rival Verndale Tuesday, winning 10-3 and 12-3.

Eric Wallgren crushed a first inning grand slam to get the twin bill started and Taylor Perala knocked in three runs, with a triple to the gap in game two, creating a gap on the scoreboard.

"I've seen a lot of homeruns hit by high school ball players," Head Coach Chris Bushinger said. "Not too many of them can compare to that one."

Playing with more confidence has the Eagles soaring all around the diamond.

"One of the things that I thought we also did well was being aggressive on the base-paths," he said. "We took some chances--some didn't pay off, but a large part of them did. By being aggressive, it created some great scoring opportunities for us."

The sweep keeps the Eagles one game back of conference leaders Sebeka and Ottertail Central and tied with Bertha-Hewitt at 6-2.

Upcoming doubleheaders should keep the race tight, as the league leaders will face each other the final week of the regular season, May 25.

The Eagles are the only team to take a game from Ottertail Central this season. NY Mills has a showdown with state ranked Sebeka next on the conference slate in Sebeka.

Playing a complete game at the plate and in the field will determine how far the Eagles will go this year. More efforts like both games against Verndale give the team an excellent chance to move on into the post-season.

Both starting pitchers, Ted Rohr and Adam Snelgrove, went the distance. Rohr gave up only three hits in seven innings of work, as he has proved to be the workhorse for Coach Bushinger's staff.

Sophomore, Adam Snelgrove, who has shown he can dominate from the rubber, gave up six hits, striking out five, keeping the Pirates off the board in every inning but one. Both hurlers gave up three runs behind a lot of support from Eagle hitters.

"I think one of the biggest factors to our success last night was that we really limited the free passes and extra outs," Bushinger said.

Jarrod Norton led the way going 5-8 with four RBI in the two games. Wallgren's grand slam highlighted a five RBI performance. Tanner Wegscheid kept his on-base percentage at all-conference numbers going 4-6 with four runs and three walks. Perala went 2-4 with a run scored and three RBI.

Game notes: Snelgrove threw 109 pitches on way to his complete game.
