Eagles oust Yellowjackets in tennis playoffs
There was no better time for New York Mills' first tennis victory of the season than the opening pigtail game of Section 8A playoffs.
Friday, the Eagles avenged two losses to the Yellowjackets this season by scores of 5-2 in September and 4-3 the day prior, Thursday, Oct. 6.
The Eagles returned the favor sweeping all the singles matches in windy conditions not ideal for tennis play for a 4-3 upset victory advancing to play top-rated Pequot Lakes indoors in Grand Forks, N.D., Tuesday, Oct. 11.
"Our two most exciting matches of the week were back-to-back with Hwy. 10 rivals Perham," NY Mills Head Coach Gary Bach said.
At first singles: Jenna Esala used a consistent and calm game getting the ball back in blustery conditions to fluster Suzanne Coleman 6-2, 6-3. Coleman showed a stronger groundstroke game but the windy conditions wreaked havoc with her shot-making abilities.
At two-singles: Krista Guldseth overcame a few shaky moments to take out Ashley Silbernagel in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Vicky Selander defeated Chelsea Honer for the second day in a row, 6-2, 6-1. Thursday, Selander won by scores of 7-5, 6-2.
Abby Salo won at four-singles for the second day in a row, this time over Josie Beach, 6-1, 6-2.
Perham swept the three doubles matches; Hannah Brenk and Paige Biegler defeated Kristin Kane and Emily Blomberg four and four at one-doubles.
Katie Howey and Maggie Rennicke beat Megan Dow and Jordin Roberts two and three at two-doubles.
In the final doubles match, MaKayla Kroenke and Betsy Pearson defeated Guro Reinass and Kori Salo two and three.
Four Eagle players: Selander, Blomberg and doubles combo Kane and Abby Salo will also compete in individual tournament play-in matches, while doubles entrants Esala and Guldseth will compete in the first match in Grand Forks on Friday.
