Eagles in scoring battle against Ottertail Central
The elements of wind and rain did little to slow down the Ottertail Bulldogs in a 50-20 win over the New York Mills Eagles football team Friday night in Battle Lake.
The Bulldogs put up 435 yards of offense scoring seven touchdowns, mostly in the first half, as the starters dominated the Eagles. Bulldog quarterback Marty Charest was 6-8 passing for 193 yards with two touchdowns. Over 100 yards came in his first two passing attempts of the game. Charest also had a couple big hits on defense.
"We got beat by a very good football team. OTC was very physical and that is something that we need to start to do," Head Coach Matt Radniecki said.
The game evened out in the second half with a bright spot being the Eagles putting together a nice 13-play, seven-minute drive to start the second half against the starting Bulldog defense.
"I was very pleased with how we played in the second half."
The scoring drive concluded with a 32-yard pass from Tanner Wegsceid to Spencer Imsande for the touchdown.
"We made some plays in this drive. That is something that we need to happen. Players need to make plays and we got two fourth down conversions to keep the drive alive."
The drive gave NY Mills a little bit of confidence and contributed to making better plays on both sides of the ball.
"We need to be more physical up front. We got better this week but we have room for improvement in that area."
Another boost to the Eagles will be the return of Shane Novak, a sophomore starter, who broke bones in his wrist in pre-season practice.
"We're pretty healthy too. Novak, who would have started for us the first two weeks, is cleared to play and he'll help us."
Novak will play defense and may run the ball if his wrist allows. The Eagles are looking for some punch to sustain drives on offense.
"On offense we started to get into a good tempo and we had success running and passing."
This Friday, Mills travels to 0-2 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg to take on the Fighting Saints.
"This should be a great game and we look forward to the challenge of defeating KMS. We have gotten better in these first two weeks and we need to continue to work hard and have a great attitude."
KMS is 0-2 so one of the teams will win their first game of the year. According to Radniecki, the Saints are in a rebuilding mode like NY Mills.
"If we come ready and have a good week of practice we can get a 'W' next Friday. We have a good chance to compete and win that game."
