Eagles shutout BHV, defeat Frazee, move on in Section 6A playoffs
The New York Mills Eagles baseball team continued to ride hot pitching and solid defense moving on in Section 6A playoffs. They opened up a three-game set in New York Mills Thursday, June 2, with a decisive 5-0 blanking of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale.
Adam Snelgrove pitched a complete game three-hitter, walking three Raiders and striking out six. Behind him, the Eagles defense played an error free ball game with some help from a stiff wind blowing in from centerfield.
Spencer Imsande, in center, and Shane Novak, the right fielder, were both aided by the wind as it held up two shots to the gap that would have been extra base hits. Instead, both players were able to track down the ball.
Imsande made a number of nice catches in center field.
He also led the way early at the plate with a two-RBI base hit in the first inning to score Brandon Kupfer and Tyler Patron.
Mason Roberts led off the game with a base hit and also scored in the first inning on a single by Kupfer.
Up 3-0 after one inning of play, the Eagles added a run in the second. Tristan Huwe drew a bases loaded walk to score Tanner Wegscheid.
The final run came in the fourth inning. Roberts doubled to lead off. Wegscheid and Kupfer were retired and Patron came up with a two-out base hit to score Roberts and add some insurance in the 5-0 shutout.
NY Mills chased Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale starter Dallas Ehrmantraut after only an inning and 2/3. He faced 13 batters, allowed three hits, four runs, three of them earned. He walked three and struck out one.
Dustin Motschenbacher allowed one run in four and 1/3 innings of relief. He faced 16 batters, fanning one, walking none, allowing three hits.
Motschenbacher retired the Eagles in order in his final two innings of work.
Snelgrove scattered three Raider hits, walked three and struck out six for the complete game shutout.
His three-hitter comes on the heels of Patron's no-hitter thrown Tuesday against Eagle Valley to open the playoffs.
Frazee defeated Sebeka 8-7 to advance to the Sub-Section final against NY Mills, where the Eagles returned the favor winning 8-7 to take the top seed into the Section final four in Fergus Falls Tuesday, June 7.
NY Mills will play the south Sub-Section's number three seed, Brandon-Evansville, who defeated Hancock, the eight-seed, to advance. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Frazee will face Hancock in an elimination game at 4 p.m.
