Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son




Emelia "Babe" Elizabeth Ebeling, 92, of Perham died Nov. 2, 2013, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, N.D. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Perham. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Babe was born in Perham, on Jan. 7, 1921 to Killian and Anna (Fiedler) Guck. She grew up near Perham and attended Country School District 248. Babe was united in marriage to Edward Ebeling on Aug. 14, 1940. Their marriage was blessed with six children. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, which she faithfully attended. Ed and Babe farmed in the Perham area until 1952 when they moved into Perham. Babe worked at a local caf until 1960 when she and Ed purchased that caf. They operated the "Ebeling Caf" until 1985.

Through the years Babe was an avid reader and knitter. She also enjoyed cooking and baking with pastries being her specialty. Babe loved a good game of cards whether it was bridge with the Bridge Club, whist at Richville or Sunday evening card games with her family. She was active in church and community organizations including LWML, Women's Bible Study, and Abes & Sarahs at St. Paul's Church and the American Cancer Society.

Babe continued to live in her home until the time of her death. She treasured the time she spent with family and friends and always welcomed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they would stop to visit.

Surviving Babe are her four sons, Sgt. Maj. Edward Roger (Jan) Ebeling, USMC, Arlington, Va., Gary (Donna) Ebeling, Randy (Carol) Ebeling and Bob Ebeling; one daughter, Doris (Keith) Boehlke, all of Perham; 10 grandchildren, Daniel Ebeling, Mark (Susan) Ebeling, Jon (Jodee) Ebeling, Lisa (Ben) Evenson, Ginger (Randy) Skaja, Kelly (Brad) Desormey, Amy (Paul) Nordmeier, Christy (Nick) Woodard, Shawn (Leah) Ebeling and Angela (Travis) Aanenson; one step-grandchild, Jena Boehlke; 14 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Alex Guck.

Babe was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Daniel; her parents; and nine brothers and sisters.
