Esther M. Goodman, 82, of Mahnomen, died Friday, September 19, 2008 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
Esther Marie Ahbedaush was born to Charles and Alice (Northup) Ahbedaush on Sept. 28, 1925 in Twin Lakes Township, near Mahnomen. She attended rural Mahnomen County Schools and the Indian School in Flandreau, S.D. She lived in Minneapolis prior to returning to the White Earth area.
Esther married Joseph Goodman on June 21, 1952 in Park Rapids. She worked for the Ah Gwah Ching Sanatorium at Walker, Minn., for a number of years. She then moved to Hibbing, Minn., where she worked in a nursing home. Esther also raised her grandchildren, Michelle Goodman Walker, Shy Basswood, Robert Goodman and Vanessa Goodman.
Esther loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, playing bingo, going to powwows, doing word find puzzles and attending garage sales. She was a member of Wisdom Steps.
Surviving Esther are her daughter, Char Lee (Tony Ovaldson) of Mahnomen; sons, Michael Goodman (Shannon Pappenfus) of Mahnomen and Joseph (Barb) Goodman Jr. of Hinckley, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and a sister, Susan Butcher of White Earth.
Preceding Esther in death were her husband, Joe (1991); a daughter, Joan Goodman Ovaldson; a son, Billy; and a sister, Margaret Hanks.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21 at the White Earth Assembly of God Church in White Earth, with the Rev. Tim Brown officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, White Earth.
