Esther was born March 14, 1920 to Louis and Ella Johnson in Huron, S.D. Esther moved with her family to what Esther lovingly called the Golden Ridge Addition of Fargo, N.D., where she grew up and received her education. Her family moved to rural Ogema, Minn., where Esther helped her mother with her eight brothers and sisters.

Esther married Merle Mitchell on Feb. 28, 1949 in Callaway, Minn. Esther and Merle lived and raised their family in Frazee. Merle died May 1, 1980.

Esther was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee and an active member for many years in the LWML.

Esther enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, crocheting, reading and doing the crossword puzzle in her daily paper.

Most of all, she enjoyed her family, especially being able to host in her home her children and grandchildren for holiday meals until she moved to the Care Center in 2012.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Beverly Mitchell of Frazee; her two sons, Gerald and Audrey of Frazee and Dennis and Karen of Perham; six grandchildren, Chad and Trescha Mitchell, Jeremy and Heather Mitchell, Denelle and Mike Baumgart, Joshua Mitchell, Justin and Sara Mitchell and Jared Mitchell; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Braun and Ardyce (Gene) Schouviller, both of Detroit Lakes; two brothers, Ray Kenny (Ellen) Johnson of Detroit Lakes and Leland Johnson of Waukesha, Wis.; along with many nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Irene Johnson of Detroit Lakes and Trudy Mitchell of Fargo.

Preceeding Esther in death was her husband, Merle; granddaughter, Alisa Mitchell; brothers, Erwin, Merl and Gordon Johnson; and sister, Fern Thompson.
