More than 100 students from Heart of the Lakes Elementary, St. Henry's Catholic and St. Paul's Lutheran schools in Perham participated in a Fall Americanism Contest. The contest was sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of local VFW Post 4020.

Kindergarten through second grade students colored a "Pledge of Allegiance" print, and students in third and fourth grades created posters labeled "Uncommon Heroes," which honored an individual or group of people who have served in the United States military.

Local winners included: Molly Pearson, first place, and Trinity Covington, second place. Both are second graders at St. Henry's Area School.

Rian Solberg, a Heart of the Lakes Elementary third grader, won first place awards at both the local and district levels.

Nick Baker, a fourth grader at St. Henry's, was the local second place winner.

Prizes awarded at the local level included two gold dollar coins for first place and one gold dollar coin for second place. All participants received an American flag.

Solberg's district level prize was a patriotic picture frame.
