Fergus Falls big eighth inning stings Perham Buzz 13-8
DETROIT LAKES -- Perham erased a 7-2 deficit with a six-run seventh inning, but Fergus Falls batted around in the eighth inning to put away the Buzz 13-8 in second round District 9 play in Detroit Lakes Friday afternoon.
The teams traded a pair of runs three times in an inning and one-half, beginning with a two-run burst for the lead by Fergus Falls in the bottom of the fourth.
Pete Gaustad and Brady Hansen hit back-to-back doubles and both scored for a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Hein and Gabe Pankonin tied the game in the top of the fifth. Pankonin doubled to score Hein. Jesse Hein singled to score Pankonin.
The performance of Pankonin in the first two games of the tournament has been otherworldly.
The Perham catcher went 8-8 before being retired in his fifth appearance Friday.
During the streak, Pankonin hit two singles, four doubles and two home runs in Washington Park.
Pankonin was 4-5 with a pair of RBI. He missed the cycle by a triple hitting two singles, a double and a dinger.
The effort was not enough to stop Fergus Falls, who chased starter Jesse Hein in five innings and blew up on the Buzz bullpen.
Fergus Falls was in control of the game up to the seventh inning when Perham saw starter Zach Rengel for the fourth time through the order.
Pankonin's home run got the inning started cutting the lead to 7-3. Jesse Hein, Eric Brauch, Ivan Nodsle, J.T. Laughlin and Jack Stigman all scored consecutively on five hits in the inning to put a reeling Buzz team quickly back in the lead 8-7.
Speedy Abbot Aho walked, was sacrificed to second base by Austin Hanson, reached third base on an error and scored on a Brady Hansen single to tie the game at eight in Fergus' half of the seventh.
The feel on the field was a potential run into extra innings from both teams with 16 runs up and both squads answering the threats of the other.
Reece Johnson came on in relief of Rengel and quieted the Perham bats sending the Buzz down in order in the away half of the eighth.
Fergus Falls took advantage of the lack of Perham offense and batted around in the eighth inning scoring five times for the 13-8 final.
Johnson helped earn the game victory and the win on the mound when he and Luke Heck doubled to start the eighth.
Johnson's RBI was the game-winning hit.
Jack Stigman took the loss for Perham. He pitched two innings, allowing four runs.
The game-winning hit came off of Jordan Hein in relief of Stigman. Heck's double sent Stigman to the bench where he watched a wild Jordan Hein tally the loss for him.
Hein was pulled after two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks. Garrett Biegler got the final out of the eighth.
Johnson's pitching victory came on 2.2 innings of work. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and fanned one.
Fergus Falls hit seven doubles off Perham pitching in the game.
