Finnish Language Week coming up at Finn Creek
The Finn Creek Museum near New York Mills will be hosting an opportunity for youth ages six to 13 to learn Finnish from museum volunteers and Salolampi staff members.
Activities will be held Monday-Thursday, Aug. 19-22, from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Finn Creek Museum.
This experience will introduce youth to an immersion setting of language learning including songs, games and activities. This experience has been offered for many years at the museum and has become a traditional leading up to the Finn Creek Folk Festival, which occurs every summer during the last weekend of August.
Finnish Language Week is an effort to ‘plant seeds’ of learning in the young people of this area who may be curious about the language and culture of their ancestors. It is also an opportunity to understand more about the heritage of New York Mills area people.
The pride of Finns in Minnesota is as strong as ever right now, as the 150th anniversary of Finnish immigrants coming to Minnesota approaches.
Pre-register by calling Iida at 218-385-2829. There is no registration fee, but donations to the museum will be accepted.
