Fire destroys home in rural Wadena County
A Wadena County family of five narrowly escaped its burning house in a Saturday morning fire.
The fire at a home in Orton Township was reported to Wadena County sheriff's deputies at 9:16 a.m., Investigator Amy Ament stated in a Monday news release.
Ament said the family's children woke up their parents to inform them of the blaze, and the family left the house by jumping out of a window on the second floor.
The parents, Dereck and Kimberly Stockman, both sustained injuries. Dereck suffered frostbite when he ran to a neighbor's house to call for help and Kimberly broke her ankle when she jumped out the window, Ament said.
All five family members were treated for smoke inhalation at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena. A 2-month-old child and Kimberly Stockman were transported to another hospital for treatment, according to the release.
By the time emergency crews were on scene, the rural house was engulfed in flames and was destroyed, Ament said. The cause of the fire is being investigated, she said.
