'FM Kicks Band' on a mission
The "FM Kicks Band" will present "A Tribute to Count Basie" at the Historic Holmes Theatre on Thursday, July 1 at 8 p.m.
For several years, the "FM Kicks Band" has played for many public dances, History of Jazz concerts, and public concerts throughout Fargo and the surrounding area. The band is made up of some of Fargo/Moorhead's finest jazz musicians. They are a 17-piece big band with a mission to "preserve American Big Band Jazz." One of their favorite big bands of all time is the "Count Basie Orchestra." The band will be performing some of Count Basie's most popular hits.
The Basie Orchestra has been called "the swingingest band in all the land," and they are one of the most thriving big bands in history. In his 80-year life span, their leader, William "Count" Basie so expanded and elevated the art form of Jazz, that his legacy is regarded as an "American Institution" by modern music's connoisseurs around the world. The "Count" was the first leader of a Kansas City style swing band to rise to national fame. Count Basie and his band played with such stars as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. During the 1940s and '50s, Basie and his orchestra were one of the most popular big bands in the U.S. with hits like "One O'Clock Jump" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside."
