Football: Eagles even record with shutout on the road
MURDOCK — The New York Mills Eagles football team put up one of the team’s biggest performances in years in a 40-0 whitewashing at Murdock over the Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints Friday in Prairie Conference football action.
The Eagles ran over the Saints for 412 total yards, all gained on the ground.
“We were able to get outside some and that really helped us,” Head Coach Matt Radnieicki said. “Our receivers did a nice job of blocking downfield to bust open some big plays.
The Eagles did not throw a pass and never sent the punt team onto the field in a dominating offensive performance.
Tyler Patron ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns from 12, 8 and five yards for an early 21-0 lead. Quarterback Dan Kraft scored from 53 yards to give the Eagles a 27-0 lead at the break.
AJ Wegscheid scored from 30 yards in the third quarter. Wegscheid also went over the century mark posting 117 yards rushing. Kraft ended up with 93 yards.
Jackson Veazie capped the Eagle scoring in the final frame with a two-yard touchdown run.
The offensive outburst gave the Eagles defense a boost in gaining the shutout. The Eagles also played clean football garnering only one flag for five yards and had no turnovers in the game.
“Our defense played very well,” Radnieicki said. “We tackled, for the most part, very well and also did a nice job of knowing and trusting our reads and being in the right place at the right time. We were able to stop their running game and held their leading rusher to 16 yards. In the passing game we didn’t give up the big play and also put pressure on the quarterback to make him hurry his throws.”
The defense forced three turnovers and held the Saints to only 124 total yards.
New York Mills improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Prairie Conference South a game back of Browerville and Ottertail Central.
The Eagles host Browerville Friday on Parents’ Night. The Tigers are 1-3 overall and are tied with the Eagles at 1-1 in the conference. The Eagles should have an opportunity to put up another big offensive night. The Tigers are allowing nearly 40 points per game and have scored 34 total points this season having been the victims of shutouts to Osakis and Ottertail Central.
