WADENA -- According to a report by Sportscow.com's Kyle Gylsen, former Perham head football coach Howie Kangas will take over the reins of the football program at Wadena-Deer Creek High School beginning this coming season.

The Wadena-Deer Creek school board approved the hiring of Kangas in June to be the new head coach.

Kangas coached at Perham for 18 seasons and compiled a record of 119-65, giving him the most wins in school history.

Kangas took the Yellowjackets to the Section 8AAA championship in each of his last five seasons in Perham. He ended his career with 11 consecutive winning seasons.

The last football game Kangas coached was a 48-16 loss to Pequot Lakes in the 2009 section final.

Wadena-Deer Creek football has been less than stellar for decades.

The move is a must for a program that has not won more than one game per season since a 3-6 effort in 2005.

Since the 2003 season, the Wolverines are 11-69. Over the past four seasons, Wadena-Deer Creek has a record of 2-34.

Last season's squad was outscored 314-109 in a season with nine losses and no victories.

The knowledge, experience and winning style of Kangas will be a welcome boon to a program desperate for victories.
