Football: Ninth graders down Vikings
The Yellow Jacket ninth grade football team raised their record to 2-3 last Thursday, October 6, by defeating the Pelican Rapids Vikings freshmen by the score of 20-6.
It was windy day so the ground game was the choice the first quarter.
The Viking defense was stingy early, allowing only a couple first downs before Perham was forced to punt.
When the second quarter arrived, the Yellowjackets took to the air. Ryan DeConcini found Sam Muer over the middle for a 55-yard touchdown. The extra point failed.
After holding the Vikings to a punt, it was Sam Muer again--this time taking a perfectly read option pitch from DeConcini and racing 50 yards for his second touchdown.
The two-point conversion was good and the Jackets led 14-0.
Pelican would not be shut out though. After some hard running, Pelican scored its only touchdown late in the second quarter. Their extra point was no good leaving the score 14-6.
After kicking off to Pelican Rapids at the half, the Jacket defense was having a hard time controlling the Viking running attack.
Moving the ball, the Vikings were on the Jacket 20, when Pelican fumbled and Nick Winkels scooped up the loose ball and scooted 80 yards for the third Perham touchdown of the day.
The defense stiffened up and held the Vikings out of the end zone for the rest of the afternoon. The Jackets would later have two scores called back on penalties, one on a hard run by Cole Schmitz, and another on a halfback pass back to the quarterback Mason Malikowski.
It was a much-needed win for the Yellowjackets who had lost their last game by one point.
The next game is Monday, October 10 at Detroit Lakes.
