Frazee teen Myrel Schermerhorn dies
Frazee-Vergas School District officials confirmed Monday that Myrel Schermerhorn, the Frazee High School student hospitalized since a car accident last month, has died. He was 17.
Schermerhorn's father wrote Monday afternoon on the family's CaringBridge website: "This is the proudest Dad in the world," but Myrel "lost this match."
That update was posted at 12:44 p.m. In the hours since, hundreds of people have posted messages of sympathy and support to the website.
Further details are unavailable at this time. Over the weekend, the family said Myrel had faced complications including a partially collapsed lung and kidney issues.
He had been hospitalized at Essentia Health in Fargo since Nov. 18, when his car flipped on an icy road into a pond. Authorities believe he was submerged there for about 20 minutes.
