Frazee wrestling coach suspended for remainder of the season
FARGO — Frazee-Vergas Superintendent Terry Karger said Friday he served Frazee wrestling coach and teacher John Barlund with a five-day unpaid suspension from teaching and a suspension from coaching the wrestling team for the remainder of the season Friday morning.
"It runs from (Feb. 24) until (Feb. 28)," Karger said. "He has been suspended from his position as our head wrestling coach for the remainder of the season."
Karger would not comment further on the situation that had Barlund on unpaid leave from both teaching and coaching since Feb. 5.
Frazee is set to wrestle Feb. 27 as the No. 2 seed in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center. It will be the Hornets' 21st trip to state.
Barlund began his career as a math and physical education teacher in 2005 and has been there ever since. He also took over the helm of the wrestling program in 2005 and has led the Hornets to eight trips to state – counting this season – four runner-up finishes and one state championship in 2011.
Karger added that there was no timetable as to when a decision would be made on whether or not Barlund would return as the wrestling coach next season.
"I have not even gone there yet," Karger said.
Assistant coach Marty Aho will finish this season as the Frazee wrestling coach.
