A "Freezin' for a Reason" plunge is planned for February 6 at Zorbaz in Perham.

As several brave souls jump into the frigid waters, spectators will be given the chance to watch the live plunge from the warmth and comfort of their favorite barstool. Pre-party specials begin at 11 a.m., with the purchase of a raffle ticket allowing for free entrance to watch the "plunge."

Registration for the plunge begins at 11 a.m., with the jump set for 1 p.m. Raffle prizes include an ice fishing house, 42 inch television, and a Shooting Star Casino/spa package. Free beer and pizza will be served from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., compliments of Zorbaz.

Individual and group costume contests will also be held. First place prize is $100, with $50 for second place.

A limited number of tickets will be sold. Raffle tickets are available at the Perham Chamber of Commerce, Gene's Sport Shop, Zorbaz, or by calling Kinship at 218-346-7102.

Proceeds will go to benefit Kinship of the Perham area. For every $250 raised in pledges, participants will get a chance to win $1,000. Pledge sheets and money must be turned in on the day of the event. Raising $50 entitles participants to a free t-shirt. Prizes will be announced after the plunge at Zorbaz. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

The Otto Bremer Foundation will match contributions up to $15,000.

Ice fishing contest added to plunge day festivities

The "Freezin' for a Reason" event is evolving into a weekend winter festival in Perham.

In addition to the "polar plunge" into Little Pine Lake, which is being hosted by Kinship as a fundraiser, the Perham Sportsmen's Club will also host an ice fishing contest.

The contest will be from 9 to noon on Feb. 6, with holes drilled off Paul Miller Park, near the Kinship plunge event and Zorbaz, which is serving as headquarters.

Sportsmen's Club president Craig Swanson reported on the fishing contest at the Jan. 11 Perham Chamber of Commerce "Power Hour" meeting.
