‘Fresh Off the Boat’ at Jin Hu Restaurant in Perham
Minneapolis-based Mu Performing Arts, in collaboration with the Cultural Center in New York Mills, is bringing David Henry Hwang’s landmark Obie Award-winning play, “FOB (Fresh Off the Boat),” to the Jin Hu Restaurant in Perham on Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8 at 2 p.m.
“FOB” explores relationships and conflicts between established ABC (American Born Chinese) and FOB (Fresh Off the Boat) newcomers. The play is set in a Chinese restaurant with only three actors; it explores themes of immigration, tradition, and assimilation.
It comes to Perham as part of The Minnesota Chinese Restaurant Tour, funded by an Arts Tour Minnesota grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Admission is $5, which includes the performance and dinner.
Tickets are available at the Cultural Center, at Jin Hu Restaurant and online at www.kulcher.org.
A free presentation will provide some cultural framing for the play. Coming up at the Cultural Center on Saturday, May 31 at 2 p.m., this interactive lecture and slideshow ‘tea time,’ led by Eliza Rasheed, will focus on the history of Chinese immigration to the United States.
