Friday baseball recaps
In District 9, Division II baseball, New York Mills won their second and third straight games after an opening round loss. Post 116 defeated Parkers Prairie 4-1 and Roseau 5-2. Adam Snelgrove pitched a complete game against Parkers Prairie and five innings against Roseau. Brandon Kupfer took care of the final two innings for the third straight NY Mills win. NY Mills will play the loser of D-G-F and Stephen-Argyle. A score from that game was not reported. The Eagles lost two to D-G-F in Sub-districts and fell to Stephen-Argyle 10-0 in the opening round of District play.
In District 9, Division I, the Perham Buzz lost to Fergus Falls 13-8. Perham catcher Gabe Pankonin continued a remarkable 8-8 tournament-long hitting streak, two singles, two home runs and four doubles before being retired in his last at-bat. Fergus Falls jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Perham stormed back with a six-run seventh to take the lead 8-7. Fergus Falls tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and batted around in the eighth inning, scoring five times for the 13-8 final. Perham plays Detroit Lakes Saturday at 1 p.m. in an elimination game.
In Babe Ruth 13-15 action, Perham defeated NY Mills 12-4 to gain a berth in the championship and earn a trip to the state tournament. Patrick Murphy was 2-3 with one RBI, two singles, a walk and stolen base to lead Perham. NY Mills' Tucker Skobik led all hitters with a 3-3 performance. Skoblik walked, hit a double and two singles and knocked in a pair of runs in a losing effort. NY MIlls will play Bertha-Hewitt Saturday at 2 p.m. at Krueger Field. The winner will advance to face Perham for the title.
In Babe Ruth 13 District play in Thief River Falls, #2-seeded Perham defeated #6 Thief River Falls 6-0. Perham plays the top seed Bemidji at noon in the championship bracket. Thief River Falls defeated Detroit Lakes before losing to Perham. #3 DL plays #5 Fergus Falls in an elimination game. The winner plays the loser of Perham and Bemidji.
In Hi-10 action, the Perham Pirates advanced to face Detroit Lakes with a 7-1 victory over New York Mills. Tyler Doll spared the Pirate pitching arms gaining the complete-game victory. Chris Ruther hit three singles in four at-bats to lead Perham. Ruther and JT Laughlin scored twice for the Pirates. An usual 13 plays ended in 5-3 put-outs, including the final out of the game and all three outs in the Pirates' half of the third inning. Millers third baseman Mike Baune had 11 assists from third base. Drew Schultz had the lone RBI for the Millers. Perham plays Detroit Lakes in Audubon with a start time of 3:45 p.m., Saturday, for a shot at the Bertha Blazers in Sunday's Hi-10 championship.
