The accident took place at the intersection of Highway 80 and Lakeside Drive in Perham at about 6 p.m.

The driver of the van was 22-year-old Steven Joseph Hietala, Jr., of Perham. Driving the semi was Daniel Bernard, 51, of Marquette, Mich., according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.

Perham Fire Chief Mark Schmidt reported that the fire department successfully dealt with leaks from both the van and semi. The semi was later inspected for future use by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Perham police cited Hietala for failure to stop at a stop sign and reckless driving. He will appear in district court on June 26.

There was severe damage to the van. Assisting at the scene were members of the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department.
