Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son



George Gerald (Jerry) Bratten passed away on Dec. 28, 2013 in Georgetown, Texas. He was born Dec. 12, 1938 in Oelwein, Iowa, to Alvin and Leona Kern Bratten. They later divorced and Leona married James Wise. They were the parents of three daughters, Jackie, Cassie and Micki.

Jerry graduated from Oelwein High School in 1957. He married Donna Rae Latham and they had two daughters, Teri Jean and Toni Jane. He and Donna divorced and he later married Clelene Joan (Connie) Hite.

They moved to Battle Lake, Minn., after purchasing Holly's Resort on Otter Tail Lake. They operated the resort for 23 years. They moved to McAllen, Texas and spent their winters there. They bought a lake cabin on Marion Lake near Richville and spent their summers there. They moved from McAllen to Georgetown, where Jerry died after a lengthy bout with pulmonary fibrosis, with his loving wife by his side.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; daughter, Toni (Eddie) Meyers, Monticello, Iowa; mother, Leona Wise, Oelwein; sisters, Jackie (Dave) Schmid, Red Oak, Iowa and Cassie (Denny) Maddigan, Fairbank, Iowa; stepson, Dennis (Bettye) Hite, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; stepdaughter, Kathy (Steve) Hardyman, Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandson, Ryan Bratten, Central City, Iowa; granddaughter, Jeni (Cody) Crawford, Marion, Iowa; step-grandson, Michael (Carrie) Reinhold, Denver; step-granddaughter, Hallie (Nate) Evans, New Albin, Iowa; step-grandson, Jesse (Rayelle) Hite, Amor, Minn.; three great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Bratten; daughter, Teri Jean Boren; and sister, Micki Nolan.

No services will be held. Jerry was cremated and his ashes will be sprinkled in Otter Tail Lake.
