Memorial services were held for George Whaley on Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Richville, MN with Pastor Rod Tornquist officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation and accompanied by Carol Tornquist. Honorary pallbearers were all of George's grandchildren. George was laid to rest in Richville Cemetery, Richville.
George William Whaley was born on May 12, 1930, in Dead Lake Township, rural Richville, to Roy E. and Ella Mae (Shaffer) Whaley. George grew up in Minneapolis, MN for a short time and graduated with the class of 1948 from Hancock High School in Hancock, MN. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. George was united in marriage to Bonnie Jean Moe in November 1949. Their marriage was blessed with five children. George was a Journeyman Electrician for 12 years. He was then employed as a passenger elevator constructor for 33 years. He was employed in California from 1962-1965. From 1965 to 1981, George was employed in the elevator trade in Minneapolis and St. Paul. On June 8, 1979, George was united in marriage to Delphine Elfa Erkenbrack in Chisago, MN. George and Delphine made their home in Idaho and Washington where George continued working with elevators. When George retired in 1995, he built a workshop where he enjoyed refinishing furniture. In 2002, George and Delphine moved to New York Mills and George built another shop. George and Delphine enjoyed traveling and antiquing. George also enjoyed construction, rifle hunting and archery hunting in Idaho and Minnesota. George passed away at his home in New York Mills on July 12, 2009, at age 79. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Preceding George in death were his parents; brothers, Kenneth Whaley and Roy Jr. and his wife, Lola Whaley; brother-in-law, Lewis Farr; and step-son, Robert Harvey.
George is survived by his wife, Delphine Whaley of New York Mills; daughters, Jill (Mike) Gattenby of White Bear Township, and Erin (Tracy) Beam of North Branch; sons, Scott (Jennifer) Whaley of Cottage Grove, Kevin (Diane) Whaley of Circle Pines and Darwin Whaley of Ellwood City, PA; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Farr of Fridley; sister-in-law, Millie Whaley of Montgomery TX; many other relatives and a host of friends.
