Getting down with polka in Ottertail

Email

Ottertail is preparing to host the polka party of the year.

From Thursday, Sept. 8 through Saturday, Sept. 10, the Ottertail Lions Club will host the Ottertail Polka Daze, a weekend celebration known for its down-to-earth good times and outstanding polka music.

The party kicks off Thursday with Jerry's Dance Band at 7 p.m. at the Ottertail Community Park. The event, which costs $5 to join, will last until 11 p.m.

On Friday, the party will continue at the park from 2 to 10 p.m., with food and beer served. Cost for the day is $12. It will also stretch into Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. with a $12 cover charge. Weekend passes are available for $25.

The second annual event drew a large crowd in 2010, attracting anywhere from 200 to 300 people each day, said planning committee member Kathy Wagenman. Polka partiers hailed from Canada, Wisconsin, the Dakotas and Minnesota.

"Last year was an absolutely wonderful turnout," she said.

Folks of all ages - and polka abilities - are welcome at the event, which is more about having a good time than anything else.

"Seriously, it's just fun," said Wagenman, who doesn't consider herself a polka enthusiast.

Campers are welcome to park across the street from the park for the weekend, although hook-ups are not available.
