Girls Basketball: Eagle girls get road conference win at Pillager
PILLAGER -- EmaLeigh Roberts scored a game-high 22 points to lead the New York Mills girls basketball team to a 57-49 Park Region Conference victory over Pillager Friday.
"It was kind of a scrappy game.," Eagles Head Coach JJ Weller said. "Pillager is a young, but very quick and aggressive team that played us very hard."
The Eagles were able to compensate for a fast-paced Huskies squad and take an early lead at 25-11 with three minutes left in the first half. New York Mills held their lead in double figures at the break up 28-17.
Pillager picked up the pace in the second half nearly doubling their first half output and closing to within three points with 1:23 remaining.
W"e still need to improve on taking care of the ball--towards the end of the game when it was getting more intense we made some poor choices and had costly turnovers."
New York Mills got key stops on defense in the final minute and put the game away at the free throw line.
"I thought overall our defense was improved from how we've been playing lately. We did a better job staying with our girls and helping on screens. We didn't allow as many second chance shots their way. Offensively, we had to work for what we got."
New York Mills improves to 3-4 in conference play. Pillager falls to 0-7.
McKenna Roberts also scored in double figures for the Eagles with 10 points. Carly Bell had 16 and Paige Leifermann scored 13 for the Huskies.
"It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but we'll take it and hopefully we've gained something playing in another tight game and coming away with a win."
