"Hawley showed why they are a top ranked team in the state as they pulled away from us halfway through the first half and never looked back," Perham Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.

The Nuggets improved to 5-0 on the season and will face #2-ranked 3A Fergus Falls (9-0) on their home floor. Perham (2-6) will play Breckenridge (4-2) later today, Thursday, Dec. 29 at 4 p.m.

The Otters defeated Breckenridge in the opening round 75-38.

Hawley put up 35 first half points to just 14 from Perham in the opening round victory. The defensive stranglehold continued in the second half as Perham scored 16 points to Hawley's 25.

"Their defensive pressure overwhelmed us, as we were unable to do much of anything on offense," said Gullingsrud.

The game did not count in Heart O' Lakes Conference standings.

Jessy Noreen led all scorers with 16 points. Noreen made four three-pointers in five attempts.

Laure Olson had 12. In all, a dozen Nuggets scored in the game.

Katrina Moenkedick led Perham with 10 points.

Her career total of 1,231 points moved her to third place all-time in Yellowjacket scoring behind Perham Hall of Famer Sara Happel, 1,264, and Katrina's sister, Elisa Moenkedick, who leads all Perham scorers with 1,555 points.

Moenkedick passed Wendy Meyer, who had held third place in all-time scoring with 1,224 points.

Hawley shot 11-25 (44 percent) from the field in both halves. The Nuggets were lights out from downtown shooting 7-12 (58 percent) from three-point land, while nearly perfect from the line 9-11 (81 percent).

Conversely, the Jackets were 12-40 (30 percent) from the field, 0-2 from three and 6-16 (37 percent) from the free thrown line.
