Girls Basketball: Henning controls second half in victory over NY Mills
The New York Mills girls basketball team (2-6, 2-13) got up early and held onto a lead until the waning minutes of the first half when the Henning Hornets (6-1, 9-5) created chaos and turnovers breaking open a close game and cruising to a 58-35 Park Region Conference victory.
A Lacey Guck basket gave the Eagles their largest lead early at 10-5.
Thanks to the efforts of Eagles' standout freshman Ellie Rutten, NY Mills held a lead to 20-19.
Rutten scored 21 of the Eagles 35 points and a dozen of the Eagles' 20 first half points. Rutten led all scorers.
The Hornets took their first lead of the game, 22-20, on a three-point basket by Kaitlyn Richter and put the pressure on the ball on defense.
Richter scored 15 points, all on three-point buckets. A difference of seven to one from behind the arc gave the Hornets a 21-3 advantage in the game.
Gretchen Freed stole a loose ball in the Eagles' backcourt and added a layup to stretch the lead to 24-20.
A steal on the subsequent trip of the floor set up a layup for Freed again and she was fouled.
Casey Haugdahl nabbed a final loose ball of the half and got to the line after being fouled by Rutten with less than a second remaining. Haugdahl made one of two shots for a 27-20 lead at the break.
Henning outscored NY Mills 31-15 in the second half.
Haugdahl led the Hornets with 18 points. Richter added 15.
