Girls Basketball: Henning defeats Eagles 68-63
NEW YORK MILLS -- Despite a big double-double from center Ellie Rutten, the New York Mills girls basketball team dropped to 6-8 on the season after a 68-63 loss to Henning.
"This was a tough challenge for us," Eagles Head Coach JJ Weller said.
Henning completed the regular season sweep of NY Mills. Henning defeated the Eagles 64-51 in early December.
Casey Haugdahl led all scorers with 26 points. Megan Richter scored 21 for the Hornets.
The Hornets have been on a roll in the Park Region Conference (7-0) and hold a two-game lead over 5-2 Sebeka. The Eagles are sixth place at 3-5.
"We came out flat to start the game off."
Rutten managed to put up big numbers, 22 points and 15 rebounds, despite picking up two quick fouls that forced her to the bench early in the game.
"We were not getting good looks at the basket; we were turning the ball over more than we were shooting, and defensively we were giving Henning too many easy looks down low."
Henning built an early 14-5 lead six minutes into the game.
"It looked like we were going to have a terrible night, but I give the girls credit--they came back with some big plays to get us back in the game."
EmaLeigh Roberts hit a three pointer and followed it up with an old-fashioned three-point play.
"Lydia Rutten came off the bench and provided a spark with some steals and buckets for us, as well."
The Eagles clawed back and went into halftime with a 33-30 lead.
Both teams answered runs and the lead flip-flopped in the second half.
Rutten scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half.
Lydia Rutten scored 16 points and EmaLeigh Roberts added 15.
NY Mills held a 58-57 lead with 3:37 remaining, but Henning made a shots late in the game and converted on free throws for the win.
"It was a tough loss for the girls as we know that a couple plays here or there could've made a difference in the outcome. I'm still pleased to see how we battled in this game and played hard till the end--it was definitely an improvement from the last time we played them."
