New York Mills started the game with a lot of energy building a 26-10 advantage with just over seven minutes to go in the half.

Foul trouble erased the early lead.

"We got into foul trouble which meant we had to use different lineups," Head Coach J.J. Weller said. "Some shots that we normally would make were not going down for us, and we were making some fouls on Henning allowing them to get back into the game from the charity stripe."

A five-minute Eagles' scoreless stretch late in the first half allowed the Hornets to go to halftime with a 35-29 advantage.

Six minutes into the second half the Eagles regained the lead, 41-40, after a 12-5 run.

"We had another 4-5 minutes of play where we weren't able to put down some scores and we weren't able to get to the free throw line, as well," said Weller.

The Eagles were down six points, 52-46, with four minutes to play. Henning put the game away with a 12-5 run to the end of regulation time.

"Overall, I was pleased with how we played. This was our first game this year where one team wasn't up by a sizeable margin throughout the game -- so it was good for us to experience what it is like in a tight game. This is a team that last year beat us by 20+ points both times so it was fun competing and being in the game up until the end. A few breaks or changes in the game here or there and it could've been a different story. As a team, we need to learn to fight through the droughts where things are not going our way, play more consistent with a high level of energy throughout the whole game, and play better defense. Even though we lost this game, I still think it shows that we are moving in the right direction."

The Hornets had two other players in double-figures: Kendal Bjorklund--12 points, and Kaitlyn Richter--10.

Aside from the 33 points scored by Rutten and Roberts, the remainder of the Eagles' tallied only 18.

New York Mills struggled from the field shooting 18-64 and 1-11 from three point land. The Eagles were consistent at the free throw line making 14 of 18 (77.8 percent).

The two teams meet again January 24 in New York Mills.
