Girls Basketball: Jackets on a roll, defeat Pelican Rapids for third straight 'W'
PERHAM--The Yellowjackets girls basketball team won their third straight game and sent arch rival Pelican Rapids to only their fifth defeat of the season with a convincing Heart O' Lakes Conference victory, 65-52, Tuesday evening.
Perham held Pelican Rapids to 13.5 points under their normal scoring average per game.
"Defensively we were able to control an explosive offensive team and a big part of that was our ability to stay in front of their guards," Perham Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.
Perham's numbers per game have been evening out as the season goes on from a distinct discrepancy between points scored and points allowed early in the season. Currently, the Jackets average 56.2 points per game while allowing 56.8.
"Our girls also played much better help defense as we rotated to the shooters and tried to contest as many shots as we could. We also started out the first half aggressive on offense and shot the ball well to give us a nice first half lead."
Perham's defense allowed the Vikings only seven trips to the free thrown line the entire game.
The teams met in Perham's second game of the season at Pelican Rapids. The Vikings came away with a 77-73 victory in a game that was even throughout its entirety.
Tuesday night, Perham got up early and kept pouring it on. The Yellowjackets were up big at halftime, 41-26, thanks, in large part, to the efforts of seniors Katrina Moenkedick and Becky Stoll.
Both players have heavily influenced the current win streak leading the way most nights.
"Katrina and Becky really led our team on both ends of the floor tonight with their scoring and defense."
Moenkedick posted the best rebounding game of her career with 19. She added 25 points for an impressive double-double.
Stoll scored 18 points to go with five steals and three assists.
"Everyone else feeds off of their energy and really stepped up and made some big plays as well."
Suzanne Coleman had one of her best nights of the season scoring 12 points.
The trio combined for 55 of Perham's 65 points scored.
Bailey Strand led the Vikings with 23 points.
