Girls Golf: Jackets struggle, but qualify for Section meet
DETROIT LAKES — The Perham girls golf team struggled Tuesday at Wildflower Golf Course in 8AA subsection play but qualified for the Section meet with a third place finish while the two-time defending state champions Detroit Lakes Lakers set a new state record shooting a combined team score of 284 with all six golfers shooting under 80.
The previous state record was held by Minnewaska (292).
Detroit Lakes swept the top five finishes led by medalist Kate Smith (68), Trisa Hutchinson (70), Emma Thompson (72), Matty Tschider (74) and Natalie Roth (75).
The Lakers won by a whopping 107 strokes over Pelican Rapids (391). Perham was two strokes behind their Heart O' Lakes rivals and co-conference champions with a 393.
Perham beat fourth place Fergus Falls by six strokes to claim their spot at Sections.
"We played well enough to advance to the next round and that is always one of our goals," Head coach Cory Solberg said. "It was our best team score of the year, but we know that it can still be better. Everyone is really excited about going to LongBow on Monday."
Becca Huus led Perham shooting a 91. Liz Sonnenberg shot 99, followed by senior Michaela Soule 101, on a day that had many Perham golf balls finding sand, rough and trees forcing the young Yellowjackets to scramble on Wildflower's links course.
Individual Section qualifiers were: Morgan Daniels Fergus Falls (92), Alexis Parsons Frazee (98), Hannah Rehder Barnesville (100), Laura Niska UNC (101), and Katie Shelstad Fergus Falls (101).
