Girls Hoops: Perham improves to 2-1, winners of two straight

Email

PERHAM — A quick way to measure success in a season is to match the previous season’s mark for victories in week three.

Despite last year’s two-win season and a tough opening home loss to a seasoned Staples-Motley team, the Perham girls basketball club bounced back in a big way with back-to-back victories over Breckenridge and Wadena-Deer Creek to match last season’s two victories and give Perham a winning record at 2-1.

Last year’s team played 14 games before recording their first win. To get two this early in the season is no small accomplishment.

Perham also is benefited by a number of members from the very successful volleyball team this year. Tina Scheidecker, Maria Rutten, Analea Erickson, Amy Scheidecker, and Ella Von Ruden all got a taste of big-time winning and that can only translate to more wins on the basketball court this winter.

Rutten has led in scoring two of three games and leads the team with 34 total points as the only Perham starter averaging in double figures scoring 11.3 points per game.

Erickson and Scheidecker have scored 23 and 20 respectively.Sydney Robers has also put up 20 points in three games.

In the two victories, Perham has gotten off to good starts leading at the half in both games and then making the score stick in the second half.

For example, Perham led Breckenridge 20-19 at the half Friday night then pulled away by six points in the latter 18-minutes 28-22 for the 48-41 final.

Rutten led Perham with 15 points. Roberts scored a dozen. Erickson and Scheidecker each scored eight showcasing a balanced scoring attack necessary to win games.

The victory puts Perham atop the Heart O’ Lakes Conference standings with Pelican Rapids and Barnesville at 1-0.

Last year’s team was winless in the conference making the Breckenridge win another momentum-creating milestone in the early going.

A boost in confidence made the second half at Wadena-Deer Creek even more intriguing.

Perham matched the home effort in the first half, this time on the road Saturday, with a 20-15 lead at the half.

The second half, however, was all Perham as the Lady Jackets put up 48 second half points and turned the game into a rout. Perham won by a final score of 68-44.

Scheidecker and Erickson led another balanced attack scoring 10 points each. Rutten, Von Ruden and freshman Josie Beachy all scored nine. Roberts scored eight points with 10 rebounds, a bucket away from the team’s first double-double this year.

Nine Yellowjackets got on the score sheet.

Hope and Heather Thiesen led the Wolverines with 18 and 11 points respectively.

Having matched last year’s output in terms of victories creates a nice scenario going forward for this year’s Yellowjackets in that the team can concentrate on winning and moving forward. Something last year’s team had a difficult time with and a relaxed and more confident bunch should make for entertaining games to come.
