The New York Mills and Perham tennis team's have had very different starts to their seasons. The Eagles are young and inexperienced, but off to a good start. Perham returned six veteran players, but are struggling so far this fall.

Those trends continued Tuesday as NY Mills picked up a 4-3 win over the HI-10 and Section 8A rivals.

"We had been kinda flat last week, but had a very good practice yesterday," Perham head coach Kurt Pesch said Tuesday. "But today, we just look a little flat again and aren't hitting as well as we did in practice Monday."

The Eagles picked up three wins in singles, including a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles by German foreign exchange student Isabelle Resch. Missy Hendrickx also pitched a shutout at No. 2 singles for Mills, 6-0, 6-0.

Perham won two of the three doubles matches, but the difference came in the three-set matches. Mills won two of the three matches that needed the tiebreaking set.

"Another close one with Perham. That's usually how it is," Eagle head coach Gary Bach said. "We saw some very competitive and entertaining tennis today on both sides of the net. The difference was two of three, three- set matches went our way with some great effort by our players to play hard the whole match."

The Lady Eagles had been coming off a home triangular last Friday where they lost a pair of close matches to Pequot Lakes, 5-2, and to West Central Area, 4-3.

Earlier last week, Mills finished sixth in the HI-10 Invite played at Staples-Motley in Wadena-Deer Creek. Resch finished first at No. 1 singles in the tournament and Hendrickx was second at No. 2 singles.

Perham had kicked off their season last week wit ha close 4-3 loss to Detroit Lakes where the final match was decided by a tiebreak. They finished eighth at the Crookston Invitational over the weekend.

The Eagles will host another triangular today (Sept. 3) against defending Section 8A champ Roseau and Thief River Falls. On Sept. 10, Crosby-Ironton will be in New York Mills for a 4:30 p.m. match.

Perham has the week off before traveling to West Central Area on Sept. 8. They get back to their home court on Sept. 10 against Osakis.
