Girls track team outdistances and hurdles way to meet win at Barnesville

BARNESVILLE — Olivia Nelson and Natalie Murphy swept two hurdles races and Brynnan Covington and Sydney Karels swept the top two spots in the 800m run to lead the Perham girls track team to a 40.5-point runaway victory at the Hawley Booster Meet held in Barnesville Tuesday.

“We brought 94 athletes and did a great job from top to bottom,” Head Coach Mike Peterson said.

Perham finishers dotted the scoresheet in droves with a number of big scoring performances coming in pairs.

Nelson recorded three top-three finishes. Paired with Murphy the pair dominated the two hurdles races. Murphy won the 100m hurdles in 17.18. Nelson was second in 17.90. Freshman Ashley Zitzow and senior Emily Tobkin for fourth and fifth in 17.37 and 18.68 to give Perham 24 of the possible 31 scoring points in the race.

In the 300m hurdles, the pair of Nelson and Murphy traded places with Nelson winning in 52.21 and Murphy next  in 52.61. Zitzow added a point with a sixth place time of 57.46, giving the Yellowjacket hurdlers a total of 43 of 62 possible hurdling points after both races.

Zitzow and Nelson scored again in the dashes. Zitzow finished sixth in the 100m dash in 13.65. Nelson added a third place finish of 28.15 in the 200m dash to round out an impressive scoring day for the sophomore. Emily Swyter and Marlee Curtis added neck-and-neck third and fourth place times of 1:12.37 and 1:12.46 in the 400m dash for 10 more team points.

Six on the nine top places in the 800m run showcased Perham’s distance dominance led by eighth-grade standout Brynnan Covington who won the event in a time of 2:33.30. Sydney Karels was on her heels in second in 2:34.33. Ciarrin Covington placed in a fifth place time of 2:37.17. Racole Karels and Kayla Hodgden were eighth and ninth.

Heidi Lageson of Park Christian spoiled a top two finish in the 160m run. Lageson’s time of 5:49.12 was just enough to nip Perham’s Lizzie Fudge’s runner-up time of 5:50.24 and Mary Riestenberg in third place with a time of 6:03.89.

Maren Anderson scored eight team points with a second place time in the 3200m run in 14:54.97, behind Barnesville’s Isabelle Tonsfeldt, who won the event in 14:29.08.

Susan Merkins cleared seven-feet, six-inches in the pole vault for second place and the 4x400m relay team added their own runner-up finish in 4:41.52.

Miranda Lockhart has started to get into form in the field She won the shot put with a throw of 33-00.75.

Barnesville finished a distance second place to the Yellowjackets scoring 100.5 points to Perham’s 141. New York Mills was seventh out of eight teams with 32 points.

Rutten has big day for Eagles

The Eagles’ Lydia Rutten scored 22 of New York Mills’ 32 points by dominating the 400m dash by over seven seconds in 1:02.72. Randee Hamman of Barnesville was second in 1:11.90. Rutten finished second in the high jump clearing four-feet, 10-inches and added a fourth place finishing time of 2:36.92 in the 800m run.

Notes: The track meets scheduled in Pelican Rapids for Thursday, May 2, were canceled.
