Groffs take 2nd at AYA Championship
A family from Ottertail has taken second place in the 2013 Angler-Young Angler International Championship.
David Groff and his kids, Tristan and Mailia, competed in Kenora, Ontario on Aug. 24, catching 36.82 pounds of walleyes — enough to win a Canada fishing trip.
The AYA championship pairs two young anglers with an adult that they know, along with a professional Lund fishing guide, in a contest to catch the most weight in walleyes. The Groffs were guided by Norm Klopak.
A total of 16 regional winning teams competed in the international championship. The winning team, from Winnipeg Sport and Leisure, won a trip to Walt Disney World. The Groffs, who were sponsored by Hoot’s Sports of Perham, won a fishing trip to Jackson’s Lodge and Outposts on Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba.
“The Angler-Young Angler Fishing Tournament is as rewarding for the adults who donate their time as it is exciting for the kids who fish it,” said Lund Boats walleye tournament pro Mark Brumbaugh in a press release. “From start to finish, every kid involved is excited and ready to catch fish.”
AYA is designed to encourage youth to be active in the sport of fishing and competitive angling, featuring fun and competitive events at various freshwater venues across the Midwest and Canada.
AYA tournaments, such as the recent championship, were established by the Lund Boat company to foster an atmosphere of traditional fun-fishing, alongside an educational and competitive atmosphere.
