Rural Perham murder: Pipe wrench reportedly used in brutal killing of mother, son

Harley E. Bernu 1936-2012

Harley E. Bernu, 76, of Lakehills, Texas, passed away at home on his 76th birthday, Oct. 30, 2012. Harley was born in New York Mills on Oct. 30, 1936, and married Lois Heino in Superior, Wis. A dedicated family man, Harley raised two daughters with Lois in Brooklyn Park, Minn., while he worked as an electrician for the city of Minneapolis. After retiring, the couple moved to Lake Nebagamon, Wis., and wintered in Lakehills. His time was spent with his daughters and granddaughters, puttering around his workshop and fixing what needed to be fixed. His pleasures were simple: family, the ever-present sauna and his beloved Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

He was preceded in death by parents, Effer and Hulda Bernu; and brothers, Bruno and Orville Bernu.

Harley is survived by his loving wife, Lois; daughters, Julie Gard (Ross) and Jennifer Bittle (Cory); two loving granddaughters, Allison Gard and Mackenna Bittle; brothers, Leo and Ernest (Dagmar); and many nieces and nephews. The family plans an "In memory of Harley" gathering at Lake Nebagamon, in the summer of 2013. Family and friends will be notified.
