Hawley nips Perham ninth graders in OT
The Perham 9th grade football team opened up their season September 6 at home against the Hawley Nuggets.
Hawley, a traditional varsity powerhouse in class 2A, was a new opponent for the Perham freshman.
Hawley struck first and held an 8-0 lead going into the closing minutes of the first half.
With less than a minute to go in the half, Perham regained possession of the ball. Ryan DeConcini then connected with Nick Winkels on a 35-yard completion.
Ryan again hit Nick as time expired in the half to put the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard.
The extra point failed and Perham trailed 6-8 at the half.
In the third quarter, Ryan DeConcini executed the option perfectly and pitched to William Parks who scampered 60 yards for a touchdown.
Nick Winkels powered his way in for the two-point conversion and Perham took the lead 14-8.
The Yellowjackets could not hold on as the Nuggets scored with three minutes remaining in the game.
The Jacket defense came up big and stopped the extra point, keeping the game knotted up at 14-14.
Unable to sustain a drive the game ended with a tie and it went into overtime.
Hawley scored on their first offensive play from 10 yards. The Jackets stopped their extra point.
On the third offensive play, they Yellowjackets fumbled the ball and Hawley recovered it, ending the game.
