Hawley wins opening HOL boys golf meet

HAWLEY — The Hawley Nuggets continued a streak of Heart O’ Lakes Conference boys golf meet victories stretching back to all of last season. The Nuggets swept the 2013 HOL season and won again Monday shooting a combined team score of 311, winning by 23 strokes over Perham (334).

Willy Tickel and Andrew Cook, both of Hawley, finished one-two on the Nuggets' home course.

Tickel shot a two-over 73; Cook carded a 76.

Perham sophomore Eric Huus, Perham's No. 4 golfer, scored the Jackets' best finish shooting 80 for a third place overall finish.

Cody Cook and Nick Carpenter, of Hawley, placed fourth and fifth, each shooting 81.

Perham's Nate Bormann finished in sixth place with an 84.

Perham's top two golfers struggled in the first meet of the year that was made more difficult by a continual wind and heavy gusts.

Nick Bahls shot 90; Blake Kunza shot 92.

Perham's No. 6 golfer Ben Nelson shot 85, as did No. 5 Colin Gorath.

Breckenridge placed third shooting a team score of 364. Barnesville placed fourth with a 368, followed by West Central Area (370), Frazee (388), D-G-F (389) and Pelican Rapids (486).

West Central Area hosts the second meet of the year Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Tipsinah Mounds Golf Course in Elbow Lake.
