Heart O' Lakes football match-ups - Week 2
Six of seven games this week will be played intra-division with only Thief River Falls (HOL-North) playing at Warroad (HOL-Classic) in the only game inter-conference. Of the seven games, two have undefeated teams squaring off while two other games will give a team their first victory.
North versus Classic
TRF posted a 43-22 victory over Roseau to open their season. Fullback Hans Harder scored all three times he touched the pigskin from one, three, and 13 yards out.
Warroad was thumped by Crookston 41-14. Crookston's Josh Edlund rushed 14 times for 243 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring runs of 69 and 90 yards against the Warriors.
Park Rapids travels to Perham for the Yellowjackets' home opener. Perham scored three touchdowns in all facets of the game, a Payton Jordahl run, a Jordan Hein pass to CJ Mulcahy and Josh Still returned the opening kickoff 89 yards to upend Pelican Rapids 21-14. Perham's offense stalled in the second half in the season's first game.
Park Rapids controlled the ball and the first half with the school's typical brand of trickery against Hawley employing a no-huddle offense and attempting an onside kick, but the Nuggets adjusted at halftime with the score tied at zero. Hawley scored three touchdowns in their first four possessions of the second half to coast to a 27-6 victory.
Focus Sports Editor Robert Williams will be in Perham Friday evening. For updates on that game follow @eotsports on Twitter.
Pequot Lakes travels to Detroit Lakes. The Patriots cruised to a 38-6 win over Staples-Motley. It was the Tyler Tappe show as Tappe rushed for three touchdowns from six, 35 and 78 yards. He also scored on a 40-yard touchdown reception to lead Pequot Lakes.
DL had a slow and nervous first half at Hermantown but stormed back in the second half scoring 22 unanswered points backed up by 222 yards to score a 22-7 victory on the road. Junior QB Michael Herzog shook off any lingering doubts about his recovered knee gaining 115 yards.
Both DL and Pequot Lakes are 1-0.

In the second battle of undefeated teams, HOL leading rusher Edlund and the Crookston Pirates travel a few miles west to face East Grand Forks and quarterback Nick Erickson. Erickson rushed for 100 yards and threw for three scores in a 22-6 victory over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton.
Crookston Times Sports Editor Derek Martin will be in EGF. For live updates on that game follow @DerekDMartin on Twitter.
D-G-F makes the long road trip to Roseau in a game where both teams are searching for their first victory. Both teams lost the battle of containing players who put up big numbers in week one. Roseau was overrun by Thief River Falls' rushing attack. D-G-F only scored six points against EGF's Erickson's assault through the air and on the ground.
The other battle of winless teams is Pelican Rapids at Breckenridge. The Vikings performed admirably considering starting quarterback Devin Schell left the game in the first quarter against Perham. Pelican Rapids had opportunities to continue their win streak over Perham but stalled late in the fourth quarter after just passing midfield.
Breckenridge was beaten soundly by their border rivals Wahpeton. Tonight's game will be the first HOL action for the Cowboys.
Staples-Motley has the uneviable task of traveling to Hawley for the Nuggets' home opener. Hawley has won seven straight at home. Staples-Motley has lost 11 straight games dating back to Oct. 15, 2010. Streaks will have to collide and end for anything unexpected to come from this game.
